CCTV9英语新闻:Soldier charged with killing 16 Afghans to plead guity

A US Army Staff Sergeant charged with killing 16 Afghan villagers will plead guilty to his crime to avoid being given the death penalty.

Robert Bale’s lawyer John Henry Browne has said that Bales was "crazed" and "broken" when he slipped away from his southern Afghanistan outpost in March 2012 and attacked mud-walled compounds in two sleeping villages nearby. Bale’s mental state didn’t rise to the level of a legal insanity defense.

His plea however needs to be approved first by the judge as well as the commander of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, where Sergeant Bales is being tried. Many legal experts believed it that it was unlikely that Bales would receive the death penalty. The US military justice system hasn’t executed anyone since 1961.
