Exclusive interview with Ronald Dennis: UK Business Ambassador looks forward to Xi's visit

Ronald Dennis, a prominent UK Business figure and well known as the long-term McLaren Formula One Team Principal, has spoken of the opportunity to develop relations between the UK and China during Xi Jinping's state visit.

"This visit is not just about discussing the key issues that are sitting on the agenda, but more to know each other, to build the relationship and the trust,” Dennis said.

"This visit represents such a strong opportunity to build that trust, that understanding. So I think significant in this visit is the meeting at Chequers. This would be a tremendous opportunity for them to relax and know each other."

Dennis spoke highly of the UK's decision to become the first western country to join the AIIB and believes the professional financial services that the UK could provide will help the AIIB to build an effective platform for investment.

"But the fact London is really a global powerhouse in terms of the financial sector and there is a lot that we can bring," he said.

"We are well-equipped to contribute and I think we should not just be contributing to something which is solely and exclusively for the benefit of England and China. I think we have to be more open-minded and contribute at every opportunity to the development of the relationship between China and Europe."

Dennis expressed his optimism for Chinese economic development and believes the world should update its impression of China.

"There is this still predominant, throughout the world, belief that China just represents a low-cost labor resource. Anybody that has visited China extensively, which I have, quickly realizes that this is far from the truth."

"Chinese infrastructure is impressive, and, of course, behind that is science and technology, it's not happened by accident. And this is clear that this attitude and this vision that President Xi has for the future, up to 2025 is remarkable."
